Bringing the Hāngi
into the Modern Era

The Hākari can cook golden hāngi for about 200 people with less effort then a traditional hāngi.

GOLDEN COOKED HĀNGI

Ka reka te kai, ka reka te ngakau, Ka rawe te iwi

The sweeter the food, the sweeter the heart, the happier the people. All New Zealanders can enjoy Hāngi at its best while bringing Hāngi into the modern era.

Hākari is a Māori term for feast or celebration. We want to celebrate Hākari by bringing more Hāngi into the future.

The Hākari Design

Our Kaumatua and original designer Taki Wetere and wife Faye Wetere of Kingi Enterprises established in 1985 with 30+ years of cooking Golden Hāngi had a number of requirements for Reka Kai.

These specifications were to produce a cooker that would cook golden Hāngi to the highest standards, easy to use for all including our Kuia and Karaua and is easy to clean. From this we created the Hākari Cooker.

THE NEXT GENERATION
KAI COOKER

The Hākari Cooker is an outdoor volcanic rock kai cooking machine powered by natural gas. The Hākari can cook golden hāngi for about 200 people with less effort then a traditional hāngi.

We are not replacing the traditional hāngi, we are bringing it into the modern era. It is a multi-functional kai cooker using modern materials and heating methods reducing the work load and removing modern restrictions, stopping our whānau from enjoying Reka Kai.

Frequently asked questions

Just simply, light the burners, allow for the cooking chamber to heat up and lower baskets into place and cook.

After cooking in the Hākari Cooker, attach to hose fitting to water valve. Full with water above the rocks close the lid. Allow the boiling water to break down any grime and stream clean the basket and chamber, open the waste water valve and continue to spray out the chamber with a high-pressure hose for best result of clean. Remove the rocks to allow for them to dry and repeat the process if the cooker is not clean enough. It may require some elbow grease and the Hākari cooker scrubber to release any stubborn grease and grime.

The Hākari Cooker is on 4 x 150kg wheels so it can be moved almost every where including moving it on to a trailer or ute.

We have designed the Hākari Cooker with people in mind, meaning the cooking chamber is designed to be low with an enlarged lid, smaller and lighter baskets to ensure smaller statured people can use it including our elderly.

The Hākari cooker requires 2 x 9kg LPG bottles. 2 x full bottles will give you 2 full cooks at full capacity.

To cook at full capacity allow for up to 3 hours to cook to golden perfection

No, it is an outdoor cooker unless you have adequate ventilation systems in place (Commercial extractor hood) is preferable.

The cooker can hold enough food for up to 200 people.

The main function is a hāngi cooker, but with simply removing the rocks you now have a roaster/baker, or use the water valve to add water to make it a steamer, or add manuka chips to the bottom of the chamber and you have a smoker. There is also an option to add extras including a spit roaster for those large meat cooks.
